I drive and deliver for both UBER and LYFT since 2019, and in 2022 I added Door Dash to help increase my earnings. I really enjoy doing what I do and it's a natural extension of my prior life in human services. I also do among other things Rideshare and Delivery trainings on my ButchyBoom YOUTUBE Channel. Lately we are focusing helping with the impact on UBER Drivers and LYFT Drivers and now DoorDash of the National Gas Price Crisis making it near impossible to earn a living.
My LYFT Driver Rating of 5.0 and UBER Driver Rating 4.99 and Delivery rating 99/100 show I care about my work, my passengers and my deliveries.. Now also doing DoorDash My customers will receive the same reliable service that I perform across all apps.
I drive and deliver because I enjoy working with the public, meeting new people, seeing new sites and well because I really enjoy driving, especially cross country which I have done many times, I've driven in all but 2 of the lower 48 states (Washington and Oregon).

Generally, all apps work near the same. Once you place the order and its accepted by the restaurant or whatever, the delivery is then dispatched out to the closest driver who is estimated to arrive at or close to the completion time of your order (to minimize wait time). The driver gets very basic information, estimated time to completion, expected pay (including tip) and sometimes the approximate location. So if your driver has to travel a bit to pick up your order, you now know why. With all this information a driver decides to accept or not accept. The higher the earning in the shortest time are popular with everyone.
The Driver drives to the location to pick up your order, advocates to make sure the order is complete and packaged properly and then its placed in the delivery bag, the order pick up button is pressed and then we find more information your location and all special delivery instructions, leave at the door, don't ring door bell no barking dogs kids sleeping and I have dogs, lol true message, lol dogs barked anyway. I felt so bad. I will text you upon arrive to restaurant, about any delays, when I leave, any delays along the way and finally when I arrive, I will text I've arrived. I follow instructions, if any otherwise I will nock or ring your bell.
Could be many reasons, while I always deliver to every request, the most common reason during busy times is simply put the delivery is not worth it. Even before the gas price crisis, many drivers were picky based upon time, distance and estimated upfront earnings. Increasing the upfront tip will most certainly lead to quicker pickup and delivery and fresher food.
That's why I accept all deliveries.. One thing you could do is put in your delivery instructions that you tip in cash. The best thing to help get deliveries faster is to come up with a number that if you got a perfect delivery, meaning picked up timely, delivered timely and with care how much of a tip would you be willing to pay if you got 5 star service every step of the way and then list that as your estimated tip. We want to earn that tip and will work hard to do just that, if not, in most cases you CAN deduct or add to the tip in the app after the delivery as well as rate the driver. So tipping in advance is the max your willing to give for excellent service, drivers know they have to earn that tip and that it can be adjusted up or worse down. Please never tip bait - that is a horrible thing to never have an intention to leave a tip.
I hear that allot, I do not know where all that money goes we get very little as I'll explain and most times it does not cover the gas. Now we have a national gas price crisis raising prices to heights I've never seen before and I am from New York! The prices are north of $4.50 and still climbing by the day. I agree they should pay us more, until then thanks for the Tips they really do mean so much.
Customers often blame the drivers for late and cold food when in fact we have no control under most circumstances. We are assigned an order to pick up, if the order was placed and no driver has accepted it, it will sit until a driver picks it up, during that time it becomes less fresh and certainly not as hot as when it was first bagged for delivery. No the Restaurant will not remake the food.
Often we are assigned multiple pick ups and deliveries at the same time. We have no choice who gets picked up first or delivered too first or last. Most drivers goals are to hurry pick up and deliver so that we can get other deliveries. It serves us drivers nothing to delay your order or to dawdle on the delivery.
With me, you have no worries, your order is being kept safe tucked inside a warm insulated bag.
Customers at times get really pissed at the driver for items that are missing or because the delivery took so long (keep reading) I would be pissed too! However, since COVID we are handed sealed bags, we are not allowed to open, all we can do is verify with the restaurant that everything the customer ordered is properly included, so your anger although justified should be directed at the restaurant and not the driver. Please do not down rate me for missing items I have no choice I cannot open the bags so I have to take the word of the restaurant. - when you complain and get refunded us drivers are penalized with low ratings and not being paid for the work we did.
I take your food security and safety very seriously, that is why I wear the app mandated mask and I record in both video and still pictures each and every order I pick up and the entire delivery time your order is being recorded in the restaurant, in the car and to your door, as is the road and traffic in front of me, your order is recorded in both video and photos upon delivery as well, unfortunately this is required as there is an increasing number of scam artists who claim food was mishandled, missed items or not delivered timely or properly or at all. You will never have those concerns with me.
I started driving and delivering for UBER and LYFT June 2019, now in January 2022 I bring all my experience to being a Dasher for DoorDash, now I work all three apps, never at the same time.
Hardly, I Kid you not, I hear it all the time, I paid so much for the service and depending on which app your delivering for the base rate can be as low as $1.50 to $3.50, sometimes but not often the base rate can be upwards of $7.00 to $10.00+ but in my market they are very rare indeed and based upon experience they are time and mile intensive deliveries and when done your in the middle of no mans land having to spend your time and gas back to the busy areas, so the "big one's" are not always profitable.
For me I work 8-10 hours a day or until I reach my goal of $100 per day, now with gas prices taking almost 60% of those earnings without considering any other expenses I would only bring home about $35-40.00, that's why tips are so important.
The short answer, Tips. Thankfully many people do tip, they know we work hard to deliver your items fresh and hot and we do it on time, or before, sometimes a little late, but that is only when the Helicopter mode of my Ford Focus does not work and I am forced to sit in awful rush hour traffic and sometimes behind the worse slow pokes (you know who you are) or yes sometimes cause its hard to find your location... nothing ever more than a minute or too, that's why I communicate throughout my deliveries. Tips are the bread and butter, without tips most times the gas would not even be covered for the distance to the pick up location to the delivery location and forget about being paid for your time, so yeah Tips make our world go around. Have you seen the price of just regular gas lately its north of $4.50 gal.
Help ensure deliveries are on time by making sure that your building address is clearly marked at the street level so we can find you, at night leave the outside light on, inform the driver of any landmarks to help find your delivery location easier. If your sidewalks and driveways are not plowed or salted consider meeting your driver at the curb. Monitor the app for important updates and to be ready when your delivery arrives.
Most times a thank you goes a long way, tips of course help keep the wheels moving, but taking the time to rate us is often a very big help. High rated drivers are assigned to high rated customers and lets the app know who should and should not be delivering. Look, if I gave you anything less than 5 star service in my eyes and the those of the app, that I should be fired. It's a major strike for drivers who get even 1 bad rating. To compound the issue the apps will not tell you what you did wrong, so you have no opportunity to correct an issue from happening again.
Not really, a 5 star rating (aka thumbs up) means your driver being well kempt got to the pick up location timely, communicated any delays in doing so, communicated any delays at the pick up location, verbally assured the order was complete, visually inspected for proper sealing of the package(s), communicated that I am on my way with an ETA when possible, communicate any traffic or direction issues, communicate my arrival, have at all times kept the packages in the insulated bags and followed delivery instructions, the best I could. Going the extra mile I do for every delivery because my car is neat and clean and I use my heated seats to help keep the bags worm (behind the scenes stuff), your food arrives having obviously been handled with care, that's 5 star service by any standards
That is exactly what I am saying, anything less than 5 star is equivalent to a thumbs down. I work hard and as most of us do, to never get less than 5 star ratings, we want them, we really need them, but bad drivers should be called out and you should never feel bad for giving an honest rating. In most apps a 4 star means your willing to give another chance, a 3 star or less is real bad, it means you never want that driver again and the company should be very concerned about this individual and deactivated.
Most apps allow for 1 hour after the delivery to change the tip and to rate after the delivery, except if your a rider the apps allow sometimes up to 2 weeks to rate and tip. Other than that all you can do is try to remember next time. Many drivers like myself have PayPal Tip Buttons and/or CashApp for tips after the fact. I am fortunate in that if you want to further help out, click on any of the annoying pop up ads from this website if your interested in any of the products, we get a few pennies just for the click when you do.
