Spruce Mountain is one of twenty-five mountains in the the Adirondack State Park  that have fire towers atop them. The 73-foot fire tower restoration project was completed in September 2015 and is now open. The top of the tower offers amazing panoramic views of the southern Adirondacks, Hudson River, across and the Vermont border into the Green Mountains, and of southern Saratoga County.  Trail Rules: This trail is open to the public for nature study, walking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing. Please carry out all your trash and leave only footprints.  The Spruce Mountain Trail crosses over both state and PLAN-owned land. The following activities are NOT permitted on PLAN-owned land:  Cutting, digging, removing, or damaging any tree, shrub, flower, or plant; Hunting, trapping, removing, harassing, touching or feeding wildlife; Use of firearms, paint ball devices, or artificial light; Bicycles, horses, or motorized vehicles, snowmobiles, ATVs, etc.; Alcohol or illegal substances; and Camping or igniting fires. NOTE: The trail is closed to public use during the big game hunting season.  Please follow the rules so that this resource can continue to be accessible to the community.   While the name reflects Wilcox Lake Wild Forest, the closest to a lake was the stream that appears to be a mountain stream, a forest adventure for another day perhaps.   Backpacking and hiking the Adirondacks is only minutes from Lake George NY and Saratoga Springs NY when you come on up to the Spruce Mountain Trail and Fire Tower Hike.
